Park Gustava Mahlera
Benešova ulice
586 01 Jihlava
A place where the landscape meets the city.
A statue of music composer Gustav Mahler by academic sculptor Jan Koblasa is a central feature of the park. Stone sculptures of birds and fish around symbolize Mahler's musical work. Ten water splashes by the pond mark the number of Mahler's symphonies.
The architectural composition of the park is conceived as a contrast of the landscape with the city. Water and rolling grass areas alongside sharply shaped forms and stone elements meet the history of the place — with the area of the castle park, the line of the city walls and the exposed foundations of a burnt synagogue. The view from above offers a vantage point in the historic bastion of the fortifications.
The grand opening of Gustav Mahler Park and the unveiling of the composer's monument took place in the presence of the President of the Republic Vaclav Klaus on July 7, 2010, the day of the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth.
